When planning a vacation, it can be difficult to decide where exactly to go. Do you want something relaxing and low-key, or high octane and full of adventure? Family-friendly, or an adults only getaway? To be in the middle of nature, or immersed in cultural experiences? Luckily, Costa Rica checks all of those boxes. There are a million reasons why you should consider the country for your next trip, but here are just a few of our favorites to get you started:
Traveling to the country is very easy
Costa Rica has two major airports, Juan Santamaría in San José, and Guanacaste Airport in Liberia, which cater to large international airline carriers. Their large network of flights include direct connections to major cities across the US and Canada, Central and South America, and Europe. Regional airlines based at both also provide easy connections to the rest of the country. Entry requirements into the country itself are generally easy, making it a good choice for travelers without much international travel experience, and a visa is not needed for citizens of many other nations. A majority of Costa Ricans speak both Spanish and English, with even more languages spoken at hotels and organized tours, and almost all restaurants, shops, etc., accept both the local Costa Rican currency, the Colón, as well as US dollars.
The nature is incomparable
For only making up .03% of the world’s surface area, Costa Rica houses 6% of its biodiversity. This incredible statistic means that you can prepare to see an abundance of flora and fauna in small areas, and it’s common to see various kinds of monkeys, toucans, and sloths, among other wildlife, in the span of minutes. The country is an ideal destination for birders, wildlife photographers, or anyone who generally appreciates the beauty of nature.

But that doesn’t mean you won’t find any city life
As a major Central American capital, San José has all of the cosmopolitan features one would expect to find in a big city. Take in a concert at the Teatro Nacional, marvel at the Pre-Columbian gold pieces at the Museo de Oro, or spend a day of upscale shopping and dining at the trendy Escazú neighborhood.
It’s not just jungle

While the stereotypical image of Costa Rica is one of lush rainforests (which are most definitely worth spending time in!), there are lots of different climactic zones to explore. From incredible beaches surrounded by arid, more desert-like scenery, to perfectly conical volcanos towering over vast lakes, there is something for everyone. Even cool weather fans can find what they’re looking for up in the cloud forests. You won’t be breaking out your skis, but you might be surprised at how much you find yourself reaching for a jacket!
The accommodations are suited for every kind of visitor
Costa Rica has about every kind of lodging available, from hostels to rental houses and major resorts. This makes it easy to plan for every kind of vacation, whether it’s a trip for the whole family or a luxury getaway with friends. The country’s activities are vast as well, ranging from relaxing to high adrenaline, and give everyone a chance to experience Costa Rica on their own terms.
You’ll eat really well
While Costa Rica doesn’t hold the same culinary acclaim that nearby Mexico or Peru may, the food is still really good. Relying heavily on fresh ingredients, most Costa Rican food is simple in nature, but absolutely delicious. Even the local sodas (roadside restaurants) all serve up delicious plates. Be sure to try the national dish, Gallo Pinto (rice and beans served at any meal of the day), and don’t skimp on the amazing tropical fruit. Addicted to coffee? You won’t be disappointed with the local selection!

It’s incredibly friendly
There’s a reason that Costa Rica has been past voted the happiest country in the world! Wherever you go, you’re sure to meet friendly people who are happy to help you have an awesome vacation.
